The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team is one shot out of a national tournament-qualifying spot after Thursday’s first 27 holes of the Region IV Division II tournament.

The Chargers shot 477 on Day 1 of the 54-hole tournament, leaving them one shot back of Bryant & Stratton for second place and five behind first-place Black Hawk. The top two teams and top six individuals not from those teams qualify for the NJCAA Division II Championship from May 18-21 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

Sandburg shot a season-low 324 for the first 18 holes of the tourney, and the Chargers closed the day with a 153 on the final nine holes, which was the lowest of any team in the field by five strokes.

Sophomore Grant Otting (Taylor Ridge, Ill./Rockridge) opened with a 6-over-par 78 and finished with a 36. Freshman Cole Hopping (Vermont, Ill./VIT) totaled a first-round 81 and added a 39 to close his day, and Trace White (Mount Pleasant, Iowa/Mount Pleasant), a national qualifier last year, shot 82 in the first round and 37 on the final nine holes. Cooper Beck (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA) shot 83-41 to round out the Chargers’ scores.

The tournament concludes with the final 27 holes Friday. Full results from Day 1 and a live leaderboard for Day 2 can be found here
